Science and Society in partnership for a Sustainable Research Centre Watch our new movie presenting the ESS Energy Concept in 7 minutes!
This goal will be achieved in close co-operation with industry. An on-going collaboration with E.ON and Lunds Energi energy companies aims to set a new standard when it comes to energy use and reuse of excess heat while still producing astounding materials research that can help solve our future issues within energy, environment and climate. ESS also plan to use only renewable sources of energy to power the facility. In total these efforts will reduce the facility’s CO2 footprint with 165 000 ton per year, compared to a conventionally built facility. The European Spallation Source is a huge undertaking, but it is not an end in itself. It is a means to achieve scientific results and innovations for a better future, many of these within the area of energy. It is therefore only logical that the facility itself also becomes a forum for energy innovation. To this end, the design and architecture of technical buildings, conventional buildings and the surrounding grounds will reflect the latest groundbreaking technology for energy efficiency, renewable energy production and recycling. For emerging technologies, ESS will hold and open door and access to grounds, energy flows and the substantial interest around the facility to innovators that wish to demonstrate energy technology. Here you can watch a movie from the event on March 2011, where the partners ESS, E.ON and Lunds Energi presented the Energy Concept for the ESS facility: |

With a totally new approach to energy use, ESS in Lund aims to be the world’s first completely sustainable large-scale research centre.
