The proposal ESS Scandinavia submitted suggested a facility for long neutron pulses. An earlier proposal, which is no longer of current interest, suggested that the facility should be built in stages; an initial section for producing long-pulsed neutrons, followed by a second, later section for short-pulsed neutrons. Long neutron pulses provide a sensitive instrument for studying delicate material such as living material, which would be destroyed if they were examined using other methods.
