This week Lund has hosted the 14th annual meetings of the Swedish Neutron Scattering Society, SNSS, which has illustrated the usefulness of neutron scattering methods to study properties of matter.
Exciting research programmes have been presented that cover many aspects of materials sciences, ranging from biology and bio-materials to hard materials such as mechanical engineering components or the magnetic devices of the future.
This particular meeting, the first SNSS meeting after the decision to construct the ESS in Lund was made, has been the occasion to attract Scandinavian scientists – including ESS scientists - to the ESS site, and to build up an enthusiastic user community around ESS. About 110 participants from all over the world have participated.
Workshop on bio-materials
As a further demonstration of the significance of neutron methods, an international workshop on bio-materials was held as part of the SNSS meeting to discuss how bio-interfaces such as biological membranes can shape processes in the life cycle. Internationally renowned scientists presented their current works that extend from the basic understanding of molecular phenomena to new medical applications.

On 7th July 2010 ESS held a seminar at the annual Almedalen week in Visby, Sweden. The seminar focused on what the future ESS, as a European facility set in Scandinavia, will mean to science, education, business and advanced technical R&D.
Now we will publish some of the talks on our Swedish web page. If you follow the link below you can listen to Allan Larsson, former Chief Negotiator for the Scandinavian bid and Lars Börjesson, Chairman of the ESS Steering Committee.
N.B. The talks are held in Swedish.

Today a milestone towards building the world’s most powerful neutron source, the European Spallation Source, is set when ESS Scandinavia becomes European Spallation Source ESS AB.
With a new logotype and the transfer of staff and activities into the new company ESS gets ready for the next chapter in the history of the next generation neutron source.

On this weeks meeting with the ESS Steering Committee, Czech Republic and the Netherlands was approved as new partners in ESS. Now 16 countries partners in building the worlds most powerful neutron source.
- The growing number of Partner Countries shows the scientific attractiveness of the ESS. It is particularly appropriate that the Czech Republic now joins the ESS, since the Czech Government, during its EU Presidency last spring, was a strong driving force to achieve a decision on the ESS siting, says Colin Carlile, CEO, ESS.
Both the Netherlands and the Czech Republic have an extensive expert base in neutron-based science, through the Reactor Institute at Delft Technical University and at the Rez Neutron Physics Laboratory, near Prague. |
