Almost 350 scientists were gathered in Berlin on the 19th April for a two day conference about the scientific possibilities at the future European Spallation Source.

The conference “Science & Scientists at ESS”was the largest in a series of conferences, meetings and workshops with the aim of asking European scientists what science they want to do at the future ESS. Today, neutrons are used for advanced studies on the molecular level within a wide variety of scientific disciplines. The details of the science that will be done at the ESS will be decided over the coming years, based on the input that will be given by the science community over the next few years.

Early March, Johan Jacobsen, PhD student at the Niels Bohr Institute with connection to ESS, was awarded a poster prize at the Faculty of Science at Copenhagen University for his poster about investigating water mobility in concrete with the use of neutron scattering.

20 students presented their work in the form of a poster at an event at the faculty of science. At the end of the day the pro-dean for education Henrik Busch talked to each person with a poster about the project presented and awarded three of them. The first prize, 1000 DKK, was awarded Johan Jacobsen.

The experiment and investigation was conducted at ISIS in the UK.

The Swedish and the Danish ministers of research visited the ESS Headquarters and the MAXIV construction site on 27th March. It was the first time that the Swedish Minister Jan Björklund and the new Danish Minister Morten Östergaard met.

The Danish Minister of education and Research Morten Östergaard was accompanied by eight Members of the Committee on Research of the Danish Parliament, as well as the Head of Ministry Uffe Toudal-Pedersen.

The visit started at the MAXIV construction site in the early evening, where the two ministers was shown around by the MAXIV Director Sine Larsen. Later in the evening, the delegation was welcomed to the new ESS Headquarters, to listen to presentations by the ESS Director-General Colin Carlile and by Sine Larsen. Two Danish scientists, Lise Arleth from Copenhagen University and Bo Brummerstedt Iversen from Århus University, presented the opportunities that ESS and MAXIV will bring to Danish scientists within life science and energy research.

During the visit, Lund University was represented by a high-level delegation, including the Vice-Chancellor Per Eriksson and the Chairman of the Board Allan Larsson.
