The Swedish government yesterday presented the Budget Bill for 2010. The European Spallation Source is mentioned within the field of Education and Research, where it is stated that a construction of ESS in Sweden will strengthen Swedish research and promote Scandinavia as a high-tech region in Europe and in the world. The Swedish government also believes that the construction of ESS in Lund will lead to positive effects for trade and industry and generate economic growth, both regionally and nationally.
In the Budget Bill, the Swedish government announces that they will fund the Preconstruction Phase with up to 30 million Euros. The Preconstruction Phase includes an update of the technical design, an update of cost for construction of the facility in Lund, including the latest technology developments regarding accelerators and target stations, and a commercial evaluation of the project. Other European countries interested in participating in this phase will contribute with their own technical and scientific expertise.
