ESS Scandinavia is observing European Green Week by planting a tree as a symbol of the goal to realize the first climate neutral research center of its kind.

- It is important when you construct a facility this size that you always consider how to do it in an as environmentally friendly way as possible, says Professor Colin Carlile, Director of ESS Scandinavia.

- The goal is to achieve climate neutrality, and to manifest this goal we plant this tree today. At the same time we renew our partnership in Sustainable Energy Europe. In the finished facility, climate neutrality will be achieved by a number of means:

• The benefits of the output of the research will far outweigh the costs to the environment
• Energy use will be minimized with stringent energy management in every part of the facility
• The energy used will be from 100% renewable resources
• Excess heat will be recycled for heating homes and offices in nearby cities

– We are very proud that we two years ago became the first research facility with a partnership in Sustainable Energy Europe. Now we will continue to build a facility honoring that partnership, says Colin Carlile.
