Friday 19 February the ESS Industry Day was held in Copenhagen, Denmark. More than 400 representatives from European business and industry took part and gained information about how to get involved in the construction of the ESS. The European Spallation Source will be the world’s leading research centre for materials research and life science with neutrons. It will be built in Lund in southern Sweden. The ESS Industry Day was held in order to provide general information to European business and industry about the opportunities to take part in the construction of ESS, and about the R&D possibilities once the ESS has been built. The keynote speakers were Peter Honeth, State Secretary at the Swedish Ministry of Education and Science, Inge Maerkedahl, Director for the Danish Authority for Research and Innovation, and Juan Carlos Cortes, Director of Industry, in the Spanish Ministry of Science. They all pointed out the importance of European collaboration in the ESS project, and the importance of ESS for increasing European innovation and growth. - We are very happy about the great interest from business and industry in this European flagship project. Most parts of the ESS technology will be highly advanced, and the construction will be a challenge for us, for partner countries and for industry, says Colin Carlile, Director of the ESS Secretariat. - We have now been able to link to vital business and industry sectors, that will be important in the coming procurement process. The ESS construction is costed at around 1,4 billion euros. Out of this, 45 % will be spent by the central ESS team in Lund, and 55 % by the participating partner countries, mainly through in-kind contributions. - We need to liaise with industry now at this early stage so that European R&D-intensive companies will be able to fully exploit the scientific potential of the ESS, says Bob Cywinski, spokesperson for the ESS Preparatory Phase. The ESS Industry Day has been financed by the ESS Preparatory Phase, a project within the EU framework program for research FP7. |

When the registration period closed more than 400 industrialists and researchers from all over Europe had registered to ESS Industry Day in Copenhagen.
- The interest was so large that we had to extend the registration period in order to get everybody a chance to register, says Roger Eriksson, Project Leader. Now we have a waiting list of people hoping to get a seat if there is any cancellations.
ESS Industry Day will be held at the Royal Library in Copenhagen on Friday between 9 am and 3.30 pm. It is funded by the ESS Preparatory Phase Project and the aim is to involve the industry in ESS. |

ESS industry Day is a one day information event on ESS and Industry held in Copenhagen on February 19th, 2010. It will be a general information event, with talks and open discussions on how industry can get involved in the ESS, ranging from design and construction of this 1.5 B€ facility to operation. There will also be information on how neutrons can be used for industrial R&D.
- This is an opportunity for companies from all over Europe interested in being a part of the construction and design of the European Spallation Source as well as companies interested in using neutrons for materials research, says Colin Carlile, Director of ESS in Lund.
ESS Industry Day will be held at the Royal Library in Copenhagen, February 19, 2010, between 9 am and 3 pm. It will be preceded by a dinner in Copenhagen on February 18, for those arriving on the night before.

Hungary will become the 14th Partner in the European Spallation Source research center. All three of the former site contenders now join forces to build the ESS in Sweden.
The European Spallation Source will be the world’s most powerful research facility for materials and life science with neutrons, and it will be built in Lund in southern Sweden. In a Letter of Intent the Hungarian Government declares its recognition for Lund as the site for ESS. Hungary also states that it will actively work for the realisation of the ESS through in kind contributions and funding to the technological design review.
- We warmly welcome our Hungarian collegues to join the ESS project, says Colin Carlile, Director of the ESS. This means all of the three former site contenders Spain, Hungary and Sweden now join forces, which is the best Christmas gift we could have hoped for.
- Hungarian scientists have provided invaluable contributions to the ESS technical design. In the construction of the ESS, we need the expertise of the Hungarian science community and of the ESS Hungary team.
Hungary will be invited to the next meeting of the ESS Steering Committee, to be held in February. In October, the current 13 Partner Countries of the ESS Steering Committee launched the ESS Pre-Construction Phase. |
